Abstract

Musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to the lower extremity, remain a leading cause of time-loss and long-term morbidity in competitive and recreational sport. Integrated neuromuscular training (INT), which combines core stability, balance, plyometric, strength, and movement-technique components within a single structured program, has emerged as a leading evidence-based strategy for reducing injury risk while simultaneously enhancing functional performance. This article reviews the theoretical basis for integrated neuromuscular and core stability training, summarizes its structural components, and synthesizes meta-analytic evidence on injury risk reduction across programs such as FIFA 11+ and related multicomponent protocols. Pooled data indicate relative risk reductions ranging from approximately 27% for overall injury to more than 45% for anterior cruciate ligament injury, alongside measurable improvements in jump height, change-of-direction speed, and dynamic balance. The article also addresses program dosage, implementation barriers, and methodological limitations in the current evidence base, concluding with recommendations for translating research findings into sustainable practice at youth, collegiate, and professional levels.
