Abstract
This study investigated the roles of social worker in clinical setting of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. The population of the study was 74683 with sample size of 400. Taro Yamane formula was used in determining the sample with significant level of 0.05%. The data analysis technique used for this study was simple percentage for questions answered by the respondents. This study has succeeded in identifying the roles of social worker in clinical setting in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. The medical social workers are instrumental to patient’s assistance, reassurance, encouragement, psychotherapy, counseling, case selection and planning as well as mediation and conflict resolution between patients, patient relatives and hospital staff. It is therefore concluded that medical social workers should be empowered, supported and financed for adequate function. It is recommended that government should increase employment quota of medical social workers in clinical setting to overcome the challenges of short staffing geared towards increasing function and output.
