Abstract
The principles of integrity and honesty in research provide the basis for the credibility, reliability and development of scientific research. Scientific misconduct such as fabrication, falsification and plagiarism (FFP) is a real threat to science damaging public trust, compromising evidence, and misleading people from within the scientific community. The paper reviews the concepts of intellectual honesty, research integrity, and scientific misconduct and highlights the three major types of misconduct, their ethical, academic and societal significance. It also explores the consequences of fabrication, falsification and plagiarism on the credibility of science, institutional legitimacy and people welfare and discusses about the regulatory regime under the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2018. Finally, the paper points to preventive measures and recommendations in order to encourage ethical research practices, reinforce responsible science and ethical scholarship in general, and cultivate a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability in scientific research.
