Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral component of modern game development, enabling the creation of adaptive and engaging gameplay experiences. This review explores the design and implementation of Shadow Tag, a 2D survival arcade game developed using Python and the Pygame framework, featuring a novel Delayed Mimicry AI system. Unlike conventional game opponents that rely on predefined movement patterns or pathfinding algorithms, the shadow antagonist in Shadow Tag reproduces the player's historical movements after a fixed time delay, transforming the player's own actions into a dynamic gameplay challenge.
The study examines existing shadow-based gameplay mechanics and AI-driven game design approaches, highlighting their influence on the proposed system. The game architecture incorporates real-time event handling, collision detection, procedural object placement, animation management, and persistent score tracking. The delayed mimicry mechanism is implemented through continuous recording and replay of player movement data, creating a unique form of adversarial intelligence that encourages strategic planning and spatial awareness.
The review demonstrates how simple AI concepts can be effectively integrated into arcade games to enhance player engagement without requiring computationally expensive machine learning models. The findings indicate that delayed behavioral replication offers an innovative approach to game AI design, increasing gameplay complexity while maintaining implementation simplicity. The proposed framework serves as a foundation for future research in adaptive game agents, intelligent opponent behavior, and AI-driven interactive entertainment systems.
